Now retired from teaching, I can delve more deeply into drawing and intaglio printmaking, media that I dearly love, not only for their physical beauty but also for their human scale.One Small Window, an Exhibition of Prints and Drawings, March 6, 2005As of March 6, 2005 , I will be showing some pieces done since I retired from teaching. The work will be on exhibit until March 30 at the Wayne Arthur Gallery, 186 Provencher Blvd, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Selections from the show can be seen by clicking on the links to the upper right.An Introduction to the ExhibitionI love prints. I love their human scale and personal, unassuming nature. I love them for their close connection to drawing. I owe so much to intaglio printmaking because, by being both demanding and forgiving, it has been a great teacher.I love drawings. I love looking at them. I love doing them. I loved teaching people to make them and, now that I am retired, I miss how exciting it was to be part of that adventure. Drawings are where ideas are born and where you can witness them being born. I love them for their transparency, their immediacy, and I especially like them when they are most vulnerable. I think vulnerability is a key idea in this show. You can see it in the little image which is the show's namesake. In this little drawing a figure has come up close to a small opening and peers out with an anxious, unfocused expression. It is an unprotected moment when his privacy is broken and he is exposed. He looks out and we catch a glimpse of him in his hiding place. I hope you will find quality in the drawings and in the prints. I hope you will view the imperfect personalities depicted here with a sympathetic eye. Arnold Saper, 2005.
