Arnold Saper, Artist/Printmaker

Introduction to the Artist

I am a Canadian Artist/Printmaker, formerly Professor of Printmaking and Drawing at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada.   Now retired from teaching, I can delve more deeply into drawing and intaglio printmaking, media that I dearly love, not only for their physical beauty but also for their human scale.

FACES AND FIGURES, Arnold Saper and Arthur Adamson, March 8 - 27th, 2010

Previous Show: A CENTURY OF DRAWING, an Exhibition of Drawings and Prints, April 3 - September 13, 2008

The exhibition showed drawings and prints by Ivan Eyre, Clarence Tillenius, and Walter J. Phillips, each in their own galleries, and myself on the second floor as guest artist.  I showed some drawings done over the last two years and a few small prints. The exhibit was from April 3  until September 13, 2008 at the Pavilion Gallery, Assiniboine Park, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.  Selections from my exhibit can be seen by clicking on the links at the upper right.

An Introduction to the Exhibition

I usually describe myself as an artist/printmaker. My exhibition in 2005 showed mostly intaglio prints accompanied by a few drawings.

But exhibiting prints that took years to make, left me at a standstill in the spring of 2005.  So I decided to draw and draw and draw to try to uncover new possibilities.  I wanted to be unconfined; therefore the means are simple and direct, and the scale is roomy. Many of the pieces went through the same development stages I take my prints through but over a period of days rather than weeks.  The experience has been refreshing and I am glad to be able to show some of the drawings at the same time that drawings by Eyre, Phillips and Tillenius are being featured.

Also included in the show are six small prints: one new and the others made much earlier, predating the prints I showed in 2005.  I hope they add something to the show.
